Travel Basketball Worth The Drive
Mohawk Valley Elite is a 501(c)(3) non-profit AAU travel program fielding competitive boys teams in grades 5–11 every spring. Rome sits at the western edge of the Valley we serve — and it is the one town we have not reached yet.
Rome's basketball problem is not talent, it is isolation. Sitting fifteen miles northwest of Utica, Rome families often find the nearest genuinely competitive spring option is a drive toward Syracuse — a longer haul, with a club that has no particular reason to know anything about Rome. MVE is the other direction: closer, cheaper, and run by people who coach in this county year-round.
The structure is simple. Teams form at each grade level after tryouts, capped at 8–10 players and never more than ten. Each team gets one coach who coaches only that team. Every team plays six tournaments between early March and late May.

Rome Is The Gap In Our Roster
Here is the honest answer, because you would find out at the first practice anyway: we do not currently have a player from Rome. Our rosters draw from Utica, New Hartford, Whitesboro, Clinton, Ilion and across Herkimer County — Rome is the obvious hole in that map, and it is not because Rome lacks players. It is because we have never been the program in front of them.
If your son plays at Rome Free Academy, one of the district middle schools or Rome Catholic, he would not be the odd one out — he would be first. We would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
Getting There
The Drive From Rome
Better than most Rome parents expect. Practices are weekly and rotate between Borza's Recreation Center and Elevate CNY, both in Westmoreland and barely half a mile apart, and Herkimer College and Herkimer High School further east. More locations coming next year.
The two Westmoreland gyms are the short trip — about 15 minutes from Rome, closer for you than they are for families in Utica. Herkimer College is the long one at about 45 minutes, running southeast through Utica and out along the Thruway or Route 5S.
So the drive depends entirely on the week. Most of the season is a quarter-hour each way; the Herkimer nights are the ones to plan around. See Rome on the map.
Several Rome families carpool, which is the usual solution. Ask us at tryouts and we will put you in touch with other families at your son's grade level.
How We Fit In
MVE And Rome's Existing Basketball
Rome has a genuine youth sports culture — city recreation leagues, parish and CYO ball, travel programs organized out of the district, and modified teams starting in 7th grade. We do not want to replace any of it, and we say so plainly.
Rec ball is where a kid learns the game; school ball is where he plays for his town. MVE is the spring layer neither of those covers: opponents from outside Section III, weekend tournaments with three to five games in two days, and a roster small enough that he actually plays in all of them. A player who does rec ball in the fall, school ball in the winter, and MVE in the spring has a complete basketball year without ever being asked to give something up.
And we want Rome kids playing other sports. Multi-sport athletes get hurt less and generally move better. Any club that wants your son in the gym twelve months a year is selling something — a point we go into properly in the Parent's Guide to AAU Basketball.

What A Rome Player Gets Out Of It
Roughly 30 more competitive games a year, against clubs from across Upstate New York and beyond. A coach who is a current or former college player or coach and is assigned to that one team. And access to a staff that has spent a decade building relationships with college programs and scouting services — which is what the word “exposure” actually means.
MVE alumni are on rosters at St. Bonaventure, Oswego State, Ithaca College, Utica University, Clarkson, St. Lawrence, SUNY Potsdam and Vermont State – Lyndon, among others, and in 2026 MVE players from 18 different schools appeared in the Section III sectional championships. Is there a travel basketball team for Rome, NY kids?
Yes. Mohawk Valley Elite is a 501(c)(3) non-profit AAU travel program drawing players from Utica, Herkimer, New Hartford, Whitesboro, Clinton and Ilion. We do not have a Rome player yet, which is exactly why we are asking. Teams are boys grades 5-11, with 12th grade by invitation.
How far do Rome families have to drive for practice?
Two of the practice gyms — Borza’s Recreation Center and Elevate CNY — are in Westmoreland, about 15 minutes from Rome and closer to you than they are to families in Utica. Can a Rome Free Academy player do AAU and school ball?
Yes. The AAU season runs early March through late May, deliberately placed after the winter school season ends. We want Rome players on their school teams and in other sports.
How many tournaments will my son play?
Six per team — typically three local, two regional such as Albany or Syracuse, and one longer or overnight trip. Last season every MVE team traveled to Spooky Nook in Pennsylvania.
