AAU Basketball, Fifteen Minutes From Home
Mohawk Valley Elite is a 501(c)(3) non-profit AAU travel basketball program based in the Mohawk Valley, fielding competitive boys teams in grades 5–11 every spring. Utica is the largest city we draw from, and it always has been.
Utica is a basketball city with a real problem: there is far more talent in it than there are competitive spring opportunities. The school season ends in February, and for a lot of Utica kids the ball goes in the closet until November. MVE exists to fill that gap — a full second season of games, in March through late May, against clubs from across Upstate New York and beyond.
We are not a for-profit club. MVE is a certified 501(c)(3) non-profit (EIN 99-0948552), and registration fees go straight back into the program. Every dollar goes to tournament entry, gym rental and coaching. For a city where cost genuinely decides whether a kid plays, that is the whole point — and it is why no player has been turned away over money.
Who Plays For Us
Utica Schools On Our Rosters
MVE teams are built across school lines, which is exactly what makes them useful. A Utica City School District player who has spent four winters against the same Section III opponents suddenly has a Notre Dame kid guarding him in practice every week, and a coach who is not also his gym teacher.
Over eleven seasons more than 50 high schools have been represented in an MVE jersey, and Utica's schools — Thomas R. Proctor High School and Notre Dame Junior/Senior High School among them — are a consistent part of that. The city's middle schools feed our 5th through 8th grade teams, where most players first arrive.
Utica is represented on our rosters by players out of Thomas R. Proctor and Notre Dame — the two programs that produce most of the city's spring basketball talent.
If your son plays modified or JV ball at a Utica school, he is exactly who these teams are built for. He does not need to be the best player in his building — teams form at each grade level and, when numbers allow, split into an “A” and “B” roster so players compete at their own level rather than sitting.
Getting There
Practices & The Drive
Teams practice at least once a week. Our practice venues are Herkimer College, Herkimer High School, the Borza Recreation Center and Elevate CNY, with days and times set after teams are picked so they fit the roster and gym availability. More locations coming next year.
From Utica, Herkimer College sits straight east along the Thruway and Route 5S at 100 Reservoir Road in Herkimer — the same building that hosts MVE's own tournaments, with three courts under one roof.
From downtown Utica it is about 20 minutes to either Westmoreland gym — Borza’s Recreation Center on Seymour Lane and Elevate CNY on NY-233, which sit barely half a mile apart — and about 25 minutes east to Herkimer College. Tournaments follow the same logic: generally three local, two regional (Albany or Syracuse), and one longer or overnight trip. Last season every MVE team traveled to Spooky Nook in Pennsylvania.
How We Fit In
MVE And Utica's Existing Basketball
Utica kids already have places to play: school ball starting at the modified level in 7th grade, parish and CYO leagues, city rec programs, and the Boys & Girls Clubs. None of that is in competition with us, and we would rather your son do all of it.
Rec and CYO leagues are where a kid learns to love the game and gets his first real minutes; school ball is where he plays for his building, his classmates and his town. Those are things AAU cannot replace and should not try to. What MVE adds is a spring season the others do not cover: 8–10 player rosters, one dedicated coach per team, and six tournaments against opponents your son will never see in Section III play.
We are on good terms with CNY Savage and with the local CYO programs. This region is small enough that coaches know each other, and we would rather a kid land in the right program than in ours.
We also say the quiet part out loud: we want him playing school ball, and we want him playing other sports. Our season is deliberately built to start after the winter season ends. The Utica Connection
A large share of the MVE coaching staff came up through Utica University's program — Justin Mayers, Damien Call, Levi Spina and Tyrese Harris among them, with Utica's strength coach Devon Flynn running our Saturday skills and strength training. That is not a marketing line; it means the people coaching your son played college basketball fifteen minutes from your house and know exactly what the jump requires.

Is there AAU basketball in Utica, NY?
